The bishop's castle Oldenthorne ( Estonian Vana-Kastre piiskopilinnu , German also: Altenturm or Alt-Kaster ) was a moated castle of the diocese of Dorpat . The remains of the castle wall are located in the village of Vana-Kastre in the municipality of Kastre , Tartu County in Estonia . The castle is located on a mountain hill on the Embach ( Emajõe ), at the point where the Lutze Bach ( Luutsina ) flows into it.
history
The castle was probably built to secure the diocese to the east, along the lower reaches of the Embach. The castle is mentioned in a document in 1434. It was repeatedly conquered and probably destroyed by Russian troops in 1558 and 1656. The castle served mainly as a road block and customs post.
Building stock
The castle hill was heavily fortified in order to preserve height protection. The castle has a moat on the land side. Today only a few stone walls have been preserved on the site. Remains of a bridge on the river are underwater.
