Stendal Castle

The castle Stendal is an Outbound castle in today's city of Stendal in Saxony-Anhalt .

Stendal Castle, more precisely the burgrave , was first mentioned in the middle of the 12th century. However, it is believed that the castle was built in the 10th century to protect important roads and the hinterland of the Elbe crossing near Tangermünde .

In contrast to the exact time it was built, the location of the castle is known. In 1188 the first collegiate church was built within the ramparts of the castle, at the same place where the Stendal Cathedral stands today. This suggests that the castle complex must have been relatively large. Nevertheless, there are no remains to be found today. Margrave Otto II is also named as the former owner .

When exactly the castle and its walls were demolished, it is also not possible to determine exactly. However, it must have existed until 1215. At least there was still a burgrave at that time, even if the city of Stendal was no longer subject to his jurisdiction. It is likely that it was demolished during the construction of the city defense system at the end of the 13th century.
