history

Originally, in the Kamakura period , the place of the castle is said to have been a residence of a wealthy family. In the Sengoku period , the influential leader of the naval forces, Yuki Yoshitaka ( 九 鬼 嘉隆 ; 1552–1600), built a castle there in 1594 on the tip of a headland and cut the connection to the mainland with a moat. Yoshitaka is famous as a ship builder and an important participant in the Korean campaign . His son fought on the side of Tokugawa Ieyasu and was confirmed in his possession after the Battle of Sekigahara .

In 1633 the Yuki were replaced by Naitō Tadashige ( 内藤 忠 重 ; 1586–1653) who, with his descendants, laid out the second and third castle areas, the Ni-no-maru ( 二 ノ 丸 ) and San-no-maru ( 三 ノ 丸 ), and so on, together with the expansion of the central area, the Hommaru ( 本 丸 ) completed the facility. After further changes, the Inagaki became lords of the castle in 1725 and remained so until the Meiji Restoration in 1868.

The castle in its island shape was protected all around by stone walls, behind which a complete tour was laid out. In 1854 the Ansei earthquake and the associated tsunami destroyed large parts of the castle, which was then not rebuilt.

Today the entire castle area is completely separated from the sea by landfilling. There is a primary school in Hommaru. Remains of the wall have been preserved, including the base of the castle tower ( 天 守 閣 , tenshukaku ). The third castle area was converted to "Castle Hill Park" ( 城 山 公園 , Shiroyama kōen ), which is accessible via a forecourt ( 三 丸 広 場 , Sanmaru hiroba ).
