Burkhard Freier (born March 15, 1956 in Rinkerode ) is a German lawyer and head of the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Life

Freier studied law in Münster until 1982 and was then a trainee lawyer at the Hagen district court . From 1985 to 1991 he was a department head at the Düsseldorf district government . From 1991 to 2001 he worked in the Ministry of the Interior in North Rhine-Westphalia as head of the “Foreigners Affairs and Administrative Modernization” division. Subsequently, until 2006 he was deputy of the state commissioner for data protection and freedom of information in North Rhine-Westphalia . In 2006, he became a group leader and deputy head of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution in the Ministry of the Interior and Municipalities of North Rhine-Westphalia. In 2012 he was group leader and deputy head of the NRW police force for half a year and has been head of the NRW constitutional department since August 2012. Freier is an SPD member.
