Burlington and Lamoille Valley Railroad

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Burlington and Lamoille Valley Railroad is a former railway company in Vermont ( United States ). It was founded on February 24, 1875, initially as the Burlington and Lamoille Railroad and intended to connect the Portland and Ogdensburg Railroad under construction at Cambridge Junction with the city of Burlington . On June 30, 1877 the 57.6 kilometer long Burlington – Cambridge Junction railway went into operation, after Portland & Ogdensburg had started traffic in the same year.

Despite the competition, the railway maintained a good cooperation with CV. This led to CV leasing Burlington & Lamoille in 1889, which was reorganized into Burlington and Lamoille Valley Railroad . At the same time, the section between Burlington and Essex Junction was shut down, and the trains from then on used the CV route. On September 29, 1898, Central Vermont finally bought the line and integrated the line into its network. In 1938 all traffic was discontinued and the line was shut down, after only one mixed train was running in each direction on working days.
