The Burnt Mound of Caherweelder 1 in the townland of Caherweelder ( Irish Cathair Mhaoilir ) in County Galway in Ireland was excavated as part of the route investigation prior to the construction of the N18 / M18 from Gort to Oranmore . The road cut off the western edge of a Burnt Mound (Irish Fulacht Fia ).

The Burnt Mound consisted of the burnt mound material, a large trough and a well. The latter were among the remains of the hill. Two radiocarbon dates from the Late Bronze Age were obtained from the filling of the trough and the well.

Caherweelder 1 is located on a low level on the western edge of pastures. The area is at risk of flooding. Immediately to the northeast is a turlough and to the southeast is a small pond. A preference for these sites for wetland margins was identified by AA Gowen. Eoin Grogan states that in the neighboring Mooghaun area, in southeast County Clare, most of the burnt mounds occur on the edges of turloughs, moors, and marshlands. The Moyveela Burnt Mounds , excavated as part of the same program, were further north on slightly elevated ground, on the edge of a turlough.
