The Burnt Mounds of Moyveela 1 + 2 in the townland of Moyveela ( Irish Maigh Mhaola ) in County Galway in Ireland were excavated as part of the route investigation prior to the construction of the N18 / M18 from Gort to Oranmore . The burnt mound of Moyveela were on slightly elevated ground on the edge of Turloughs .

Moyveela 1

The site consisted of a small, Late Bronze Age hill made up of a large sub-rectangular pit, which was interpreted as a trough, and a smaller, roughly oval pit, which was possibly also a trough. The large trough had internal post holes. A radiocarbon date of 731–406 BC has been established for the location . Determined

Moyveela 2

The site consisted of the burnt mound material with two troughs and pits. The troughs had internal post holes that suggested some form of liner in one case and some form of suspension in the other. The traces of the suspension frame were northwest of the larger hollow. A number of external pits and post holes indicated related structures. A cow horn and a piece of red deer antlers were found in the backfills of the pits and dated 1010–909 BC. Dated to the Late Bronze Age.

The Burnt Mounds ( Irish Fulacht Fia ) of Moyveela are on the western edge of the Turlough. A preference for wetland margins was identified by AA Gowen. Eoin Grogan states that in the Mooghaun area, in southeast County Clare, most of the burnt mounds occur on the edges of turloughs , bogs, and marshland.

The burnt mound of Caherweelder 1 , the same as part of the program (in the south) were excavated, was on slightly higher ground at the edge of Turloughs.
