The Bursa subcutanea pr (a) epatellaris (often shortened in clinical use as prepatellar bursa ) is a bursa in the area of the knee joint . It lies between the front surface of the kneecap and the skin and is one of the skin mucous bags . It ensures padding and mobility of the kneecap in relation to the skin.

The superficial location favors injuries and inflammation of the subcutaneous prepatellar bursa ( prepatellar bursitis ). These can be acute or chronic in nature and manifest themselves in an increased, fluctuating filling of the bursa. Inflammation is primarily the result of excessive strain as a result of kneeling activities ("housemaid's knees") and is a typical occupational disease among tilers.
