The CAMS 31 was an experimental basis as in the 1920s flying boat designed single-seat biplane - fighter that of Chantiers Aéro-Maritimes de la Seine (CAMS) in France was built.
Design and development
The CAMS 31 was a biplane made entirely of wood. The flying boat hull was stabilized by two floats, which were mounted on the side under the lower wing. The single-seat biplane with an open cockpit in front of the lower wing was powered by an eight-cylinder Hispano-Suiza-8Fb piston engine that drove the four-blade pusher propeller via a gearbox. The motor nacelle was mounted in the upper part of the wing and supported by struts on the fuselage.
The armament consisted of two fixed to the fuselage-mounted Vickers - machine guns with a cadence from 450 to 600 rounds per minute.
The CAMS-31 prototype was later referred to as Type 22 and flew for the first time in 1922. A second prototype called CAMS 31 Type 23 had its first flight in 1923. In Version 23, the wingspan was reduced and the wing depth increased, which the same wing area as with Type 22 resulted. The type designations 22 and 23 referred to the year of development.
The test flights showed good handling of the machine, but it was not suitable as a fighter aircraft of the flying boat type. Series production was not carried out.
A single-seat airmail version was then produced, which was called the CAMS 31P and was based on the Type 22. The exact number of pieces of the post version is not known.
