The abbreviation CATOBAR ( C atapult A ssisted T ake O ff B ut A rrested R ecovery ) describes a system of take-off and resumption of aircraft on aircraft carriers and refers to aircraft that are designed according to the CTOL principle, i.e. conventional take-off and landing are instructed to accelerate or coast, in contrast to STOVL or VTOL .

The system results from the lack of space that prevails on aircraft carriers and which means that runways are too short for the necessary acceleration or coasting. At CATOBAR , the carrier aircraft are accelerated to a sufficient speed with the help of special aircraft catapults and braked when landing with restraint ropes. If the take-off is carried out with the help of launch ramps, we are talking about STOBAR .

The world's first aircraft carriers, such as B. the USS Langley (CV-1) , used CATOBAR. Today the system is mainly used on aircraft carriers of the United States Navy , but also on the French Charles de Gaulle .
