Short Take Off But Arrested Recovery ( STOBAR ) is a system of take-off and resumption of aircraft on aircraft carriers and relates to aircraft that rely on conventional take-off and landing by acceleration or coasting, i.e. after conventional take-off and landing -Principle are designed. Alternative concepts are short take-offs with vertical landing (STOVL) or vertical take-offs with vertical landing (VTOL).

The system arises from the lack of space that prevails on aircraft carriers and leads to runways being too short for the necessary acceleration or coasting. In STOBAR start the carrier aircraft using a ski jump ( ski jump ) and decelerated during landing by retaining ropes. If the launch takes place with the help of catapults, CATOBAR is used.

The best-known example of an aircraft carrier using STOBAR is the Russian Admiral Kuznetsov , whose Su-33 aircraft take off from a ramp. Although the British Navy also uses carriers with launch ramps ( Queen Elizabeth class ), STOBAR is not used in this case, as the F-35 aircraft used use the STOVL principle, ie they do not have to be braked by safety cables .
