The Vikrant ( Sanskrit विक्रान्त vikrānta "courageous") is the first aircraft carrier of the "Air Defense Ship" (ADS) type of the Indian Navy and the type ship of the two-unit "Vikrant class". In August 2006, the then Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral Arun Prakash, changed the name of the aircraft carrier from "Air Defense Ship" to "Indigenous Aircraft Carrier" (IAC).
The Vikrant is the first Indian warship of this size to be built largely independently by India. H. was not procured abroad. Since April 11, 2005, the aircraft carrier has been built under the name "Project 71" at the Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) in Kochi , India. At the end of 2011 the ship was launched for the first time as the dry dock space was needed for commercial purposes. The launch took place on August 12, 2013, the commissioning should take place in 2015. Currently, however, delivery is expected in February 2021 and operational readiness in early 2023.
construction
The aircraft carrier was built in the Short Take Off But Arrested Recovery design with a 12 ° to 14 ° ski jump , two elevators and three safety ropes. The INS Vikrant is (as of 2013) the longest and widest ship that has been built in India so far.
Carrier Air Group
The Vikrant is to be equipped with 40 combat aircraft and helicopters . These are composed as follows:
- 18 MiG-29K interceptors
- 12 HAL Tejas Mark 2
- 10 helicopters including several HAL Dhruv or Westland Sea King for the transport of personnel and material and 6 Kamow Ka-31 (AEW) helicopters for air and sea reconnaissance
