CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The CIDOC -CRM (Conceptual Reference Model) offers an expandable ontology for terms and information in the field of cultural heritage . It is a standard ( ISO 21127: 2014) for the controlled exchange of information in the field of cultural heritage and is to be used by archives , libraries and museums to improve the availability of knowledge .

The aim of the CIDOC CRM is to collectively record the diverse information in the area of cultural heritage and to provide a general framework of its formal semantics so that every information in this area can be assigned to the terms of the CIDOC CRM. In this way, important prerequisites for information integration are created, since tools for schematic transformation and integration can be developed on the basis of the CIDOC CRM . The CIDOC CRM also supports the development of requirements for information systems and can serve as a guideline or aid for good semantic modeling, data or database modeling .

The use of techniques such as XML and RDF are supported by CIDOC CRM.

history

The CIDOC-CRM emerged from the work of a working group of CIDOC (Comité International pour la Documentation) in the International Council of Museums ICOM . Until 1994 they worked on an object-relationship model for information in the museum sector. Since 1996, object orientation has been the basis of the development that led to the presentation of the first "CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model (CRM)" in 1999 . The process of establishing it as an international standard ( ISO ) began in 2000 .
