Wordfast

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wordfast is a translation tool ( CAT ).

The operating concept in the Wordfast Classic program version differs from the competing products ( SDL Trados , Déjà Vu , MemoQ ) in that it is designed as a macro collection for Microsoft Word and does not require its own program interface. It can therefore also be used directly in other application programs that allow Word as an editor, e.g. B. in Microsoft Outlook . The usual formatting functions and keyboard combinations of these programs can still be used.

The developer of the program is the French Yves Champollion , who says he is a descendant of Jean-François Champollion .

functionality

The support of the translator consists in the fact that completed translations are stored segment by segment (a segment is usually a sentence) in a database and that, in the case of similar translations in the future, the new formulations are compared with the stored entries. The program determines the degree of correspondence and, depending on the user's preferences, suggests the same or similar formulations for use in the new translation. This type of program is therefore also called translation memory (dt .: translation memory refers).

Word lists, glossaries or terminology databases can also be incorporated and searched in this process.

License

A 50% discount is given for translators in developing countries.

Technical assistance is only offered in the first year of licensing via email. The user receives further support from several Yahoo! -Discussion groups (main list in English, further lists in German , French , Spanish , Finnish , etc.).

Wordfast Pro

In addition to Wordfast Classic, there is a standalone program version, Wordfast Pro , which is independent of Word and which is based on the Java programming language and is therefore one of the translation tools alongside OmegaT , Swordfish , CafeTran and Heartsome Translation Studio that work without any additional aids under the Linux and Mac OS operating systems . Unlike the Classic version, Wordfast Pro shows the text to be translated and the translated text in two table columns next to each other.

The program versions Wordfast Pro and Wordfast Classic are sold individually or together as Wordfast Studio . Both programs use the same translation memory and glossary format.

According to the announcement of the developer, the future focus will be on the Pro version and in a further step the Classic version will be replaced by a surface for OpenOffice and LibreOffice.
