OmegaT is a computer-aided translation (CAT) tool for professional translators . OmegaT is written in Java (Java version 8 or higher is required) and is published as free software, also in source code, under the GNU General Public License (GPL). OmegaT runs on Linux, Microsoft Windows, macOS and Solaris. The program interface is available in 27 languages.

functionality

The program has all the standard functions of CAT programs: two-column worksheets on which source texts are transferred into the target language sentence by sentence (segment by segment), with both parts subsequently being saved in a translation memory; Glossaries in which you can search for single words or phrases (with a fuzzy search ), a spell check using Hunspell and (with regular expressions ) configurable text segmentation.

OmegaT's scope of delivery includes a brief instruction manual as well as a detailed manual in various languages.

Formats and compatibilities

The translation memory is created separately for each language direction and saved in the internationally standardized exchange format TMX (in the current version: TMX Level 1.4b). Text files separated by tabs are used for the glossaries . OmegaT can, however, read the TBX exchange format (i.e. import such glossaries), but not, for example, proprietary glossary formats such as Trados Multiterm.

With the supported file formats of the source texts, the formatting of the source texts is retained. Supported file formats include OpenDocument , ( X ) HTML , Office Open XML , XLIFF , GNU-gettext -.po (Portable Object) files, and DocBook . For other formats, this is possible using third-party conversion programs. The "Microsoft Office 97-2003" formats are not directly supported.

When translating, machine translations from the Internet translation service Google Translate can also be requested as suggestions.

Use in practice

European Commission

Since 2017 at the latest, the translation service of the European Commission (the Directorate-General for Translation ) has been using the OmegaT program alongside other translation programs. To this end, it is developing its own program version "DGT-OmegaT" and other additional programs. A further development enables, for example, improved compatibility with project files from the proprietary program SDL Trados Studio, which is otherwise widely used by the European Commission . The additional program "Tagwipe", for example, automatically removes unneeded tags from documents in the DOCX file format .

License model, costs and operating system

OmegaT is published under the GNU General Public License and is therefore Free Software . Since 2015 (the Across Language Server licensing model was changed ), OmegaT has been the only free, desktop-based CAT tool that has the same scope as professional tools such as the market leader SDL Trados Studio or MemoQ . OmegaT works across platforms, including Linux, Microsoft Windows and macOS.

history

OmegaT was initially developed in C ++ by Keith Godfrey in 2000 and the first version was published on November 28, 2002. Since then, the development has been supported by a broad community of translators who have written a range of additional software. Until mid-2019, the project was led by the translator Didier Briel from Lyon / France. The main developer was Alex Buloichik. The project has been headed by project manager Aaron Madlon-Kay since mid-2019.

A spin-off is the "Autshumato translation suite" which is being developed by the South African Department of Arts and Culture, the South African North-West University and the University of Pretoria.

Like Wordfast Pro, Swordfish or Anaphraseus , OmegaT was originally an independent CAT program only for Unix-like operating systems . From version 1.7.3 or 2008 the program works under Linux, Microsoft Windows and macOS (formerly Mac OS X). In the very popular Linux distribution Ubuntu , version 19.04, published in April 2019, was the first to include version 3.6 of OmegaT, which was current until July 2019, for the first time (the version 18.04 LTS of Ubuntu from April 2018 did not contain OmegaT by default; in 2016 was only once contained the somewhat outdated version 2.3 in Ubuntu).

The stable standard version 2.0 was released in October 2009. The stable standard version 2.3 was released in July 2011. The version 3.5 was released in June 2015. The standard version 3.6 was released in March 2016 and was the standard until July 2019. The subsequent development version 4.0 was released in September 2016. The following version 4.1 was released in January 2018. The development version 4.2 was released in April 2019. The current standard version 4.3 was released in July 2019 and replaced the outdated version 3.6.
