The Across Language Server is a software platform for computer-aided translation that has additional program modules for project management and terminology management.

The software is developed, manufactured and marketed by the company Across Systems GmbH from Karlsbad near Karlsruhe - founded in 2005 as a spin-off of Nero AG - and Glendale near Los Angeles.

technical structure

The software works in a similar way to SDL Trados Studio , OmegaT or MemoQ . As with the server solutions of these two programs, translation units and terminology entries (depending on the configuration of the project) are also stored in a local or in a central MSSQL database with the Across Language Server .

Editions and Licenses

In addition to the server, which can be used in different versions, there is also a single-user version called Across Translator Edition with a local MSSQL database. A connection to the server can be established with the Across Translator Edition . This enables both editing of local projects and access to the Across Server.

The Across Language Server software is published under a proprietary license and is generally chargeable. The basic edition of the single-user version is free for freelancers . "Checking out" a translation (e.g. converting it back into a Microsoft Word document) is not possible with the Basic version, so this version is unsuitable for a translator who works individually without a connection to a client with the Across Language Server . The premium version, with which you can check out, is subject to a monthly subscription.

Version history

The Across Language Server was introduced as version 5 in 2009. Version 6 of Across has been available since July 2014. Version 6.3 appeared on November 26, 2015. Version 7.0 appeared on February 13, 2019. In this version, the connection to machine translation systems (e.g. DeepL or SYSTRAN ) was introduced. In addition, as of version 7, several tasks within a project can be opened and edited at the same time.
