history

The origins of Cimier go back to 1924, when the  watchmaker  Joseph Lapanouse founded the watch manufacturer Lapanouse SA in Hölstein (BL) and sold his watches under the “Cimier” brand. These were so-called  pin lever watches, inexpensive watches with robust and inexpensive movements.

In the 1950s, the watch manufacturer, now renamed LAPANOUSE-CIMIER SA, launched the first pin-lever chronograph , of which 21 million pieces were built. By the end of the 1960s, annual production rose to 1.5 million watches and the company employed over 500 people in Bubendorf .

When sales of mechanical watches fell sharply in the course of the quartz crisis in the 1970s, Cimier developed and industrialized its own quartz movements. The quantities required for a profitable production of quartz movements were not achieved, so that watch production was temporarily stopped in 1985.
