The CR series SS4 ( Chinese  韶山 4 , Pinyin Shaoshan 4 ) are AC electric locomotives of the Chinese state railways with the wheel arrangement Bo'Bo ', which are intended for use in front of freight trains. The output of the SS4 amounts to a total of 6400 kW. The SS4 is an eight-axle heavy electric freight locomotive based on two four-axle locomotives that are firmly connected to each other. The locomotives were developed and built by the CSR plant in Zhuzhou .

In 1993, the CSR plant in Zhuzhou collaborated with the Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Research Institute on profound improvements to the SS4-0159 and built an SS4G locomotive that went into production that same year. Technological knowledge that came from imported 8K and 6K locomotives flowed into the SS4G.
