CNS 11643

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

CNS 11643 ( Chinese  國家 標準 中文 交換 碼  /  国家 标准 中文 交换 码 , Pinyin Guójiā biāozhǔn zhōngwén jiāohuànmǎ , English Chinese National Standard 11643, also "Chinese Standard Interchange Code" ), is de jure the official character set of the Republic of China (Taiwan) .

The development of this character set began in September 1980, on August 4, 1986 the first version with the name "Universal Standard for Chinese Data Exchange" with 13,051 characters was ready. In 1992 the character set was expanded to a total of 48,027 characters and renamed to its current name.

The aim of this character set was to replace Big5 as a character set. This did not succeed, however, because CNS 11643 needs three bytes per Chinese character, which means that the storage volume is 50% higher than that of Big5, which only needs two bytes.
