The Confederate States of America dollar , short CSA dollar was the currency of the Confederate States of America ( Confederate States of America , in short CSA ).

The CSA dollar was launched in April 1861, two months after the founding of the Confederation and a few days before the outbreak of the Civil War . Notes worth 10 and 50 cents , as well as 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 dollars were issued . There were many variations in their design.

Because of its economic weakness compared to the northern states , the south was never able to use its CSA dollar as a means of payment in foreign trade . In the first year it already lost about two thirds of its value; at the end of the American Civil War it was practically worthless.
