The class 9 vehicles of the Central South African Railways (CSAR) were steam locomotives with a tender with a 2'C1 '( Pacific ) wheel arrangement . The Vulcan Foundry delivered five locomotives in 1904; they were given the course numbers 600 to 604.

The trailing axle of the locomotives was moved relatively close to the last coupling axle, and the standing kettle and ash pan were long, narrow and arranged between the coupling wheels - they were the only Pacifics of this type in South Africa. The internal Stephenson control moved external flat slide valves via transmission shafts. The four-axle tender held 10.1 tons of coal and 18.2 m² of water.

The locomotives were mainly used on main lines in the Transvaal . When the CSAR was incorporated into the South African Railways (SAR) in 1910, the machines were also taken over as class 9 , but with the new track numbers 727 to 731. Since there were no similar designs, SAR class 9 was one of the few that was not divided into subclasses by letters.

In 1926 the locomotives were retired; no copy has survived.
