Caña Rociera

The Caña Rociera [ˈkaɲa rrɔˈθiˈera] is a traditional Spanish musical instrument . It is usually played by the older generation or by traditional musicians. They are played with friends and family while making music together.

construction

The caña is a stick approx. 50–75 cm long. Almost two thirds of the caña are split in the middle. At the end of the split part, bells are attached that weigh down one half. As a result, this half flies down when you hit the hand and creates a rattling sound when you snap back.

Style of play

There are two ways of playing the caña.

  • For beginners: The caña is held at the lower end with one hand and hit back and forth between the thumb and the other fingers on the other hand.
  • For advanced players: This way of playing is exactly the opposite. Hold the caña in one hand just before the split part and make the rhythmic movements on the lower part of the caña. This is much more difficult.
