The Cabo de Santa Maria ( Portuguese for Cape Santa Maria) on the small island of Ilha da Barreta (also often called Ilha Deserta ) forms the southernmost point of continental Portugal .

The Ilha da Barreta is located in the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa nature reserve and belongs to the administrative area of ​​the city of Faro , capital of the Algarve . The Cabo de Santa Maria forms the westernmost point of the Gulf of Cádiz .
