Cairn o 'Get - the access

Cairn o 'Get (also " Garrywhin "; "Cairn o'Get" or "Cairn of Get") is a 5000 year old megalithic complex excavated in 1866 . It is located near Ulbster in Caithness in northern Scotland . The special shape is called a short, (double) horned cairn . An older Rundcairn was built over here. The chamber has an antechamber and was a bit eccentric in the Rundcairn. The facades typical for the type of system have not been preserved.

Cairn o 'Get, antechamber and main chamber

Because of the missing cap stones, you can see the inside of the complex. An entrance on the south side, which was so low that you could only pass it on your knees, leads to a small antechamber, which is located between handsome pairs of portal stones and leads into the main chamber. The chamber, made of thin plates and spandrel masonry, is round to polygonal. It was filled with earth and stones. Large quantities of burned and unburned human and animal bones, as well as flint and broken earthenware, were found near the ground .

Cairn o 'Get is one of numerous prehistoric monuments (such as Ormiegill North ) between the Loch of Yarrows and the Loch of Watenan , which also include burial mounds, menhirs , forts, brochs , rows of stones and beehive huts . The overbuilding, which has no functional reasons, indicates a paradigm shift during the use phase of the facility.
