history

Surname

The name Marpe comes from the Marpe creek that drains the area. Marpe means moor or swamp water and can be traced back to the old German term apa for water or bodies of water . The place appears several times under the name Marpe in the oldest documents and was used by the residents until around 1600. Later the place was divided and Lütkermarpe was created , today Kleinenmarpe , and the previous Marpe became Großenmarpe .

Local history

In the goods lists of the monastery Corvey from the years 1106 to 1126 Marpe first mentioned. It can be assumed that the monastery in Marpe, it was apparently only a courtyard, received in the 10th century. The possessions of Herford Abbey in Marpe were more extensive . The monasteries formed so-called Villicationen , in which a number of courts were combined. At their head was the Villicus , the property manager or Meier, who was responsible for the taxes. The Villication Marpe appears in the earliest Herford registers, but was dissolved before the year 1300, while individual farms in Marpe are still mentioned.

From the late Middle Ages to the beginning of the 19th century, the farmers in the country were serfs to the landlords . In addition to managing the farms, they had to do so-called labor services for their landlords . The farmer was able to acquire a certain right of ownership of the farm by paying for the purchase of wine . In addition to the rulers of the Lippe region, the landlords in Großenmarpe were Herford Abbey, the Cappel parish , the Cappel church, the Großenmarpe chapel, the Donop parish , Kerkmann in Lemgo and the Rentkammer in Bückeburg . In 1808 Princess Pauline abolished serfdom and the farmers became personally independent. Between 1843 and 1845, the Grossmarper nasties , that is, communal pastures, were divided up and privatized. But the new freedom also brought problems. While during the time of serfdom between 1500 and 1810 only one farm perished economically, at least nine farms in Großenmarpe faced economic ruin after serfdom was abolished.

The former villages of Hestrup and Süntrup were in the area of today's Großenmarpe and probably merged into it in the 15th century. Hestrup and Süntrup were in the east of what is now the district. Today the district of Großenmarpe consists of the historic Großenmarpe and the Erdbruch housing estate. In 1773 a Gothic style chapel was built, which was demolished in 1906 against the protests of many residents and a clock tower was built in its place in the village center.

On January 1, 1970, Großenmarpe was incorporated into the city of Blomberg.
