Cairnbulg Castle
Cairnbulg Castle is a Z-shaped castle in the village of Cairnbulg in the Scottish county of Aberdeenshire . It was described by William Douglas Simpson as one of the nine castles of the Knuckle . He was referring to the rocky headland of northeast Aberdeenshire.
Originally called Philorth Castle , the castle was built in the early 14th century, destroyed in the Scottish Wars of Independence in the winter of 1308/1309 , and rebuilt by the Fraser family in 1380. Later, a courtyard with outbuildings was added to the main tower.
During the Second World War , the castle served as an officers' mess for the nearby RAF Fraserburgh . Flora Fraser, 21st Lady Saltoun , and her husband, Captain Alexander Ramsay of Mar , who was one of Queen Victoria's grandchildren, lived there. Today their daughter, Katherine Fraser, Mistress of Saltoun , lives at Cairnbulg Castle. The castle can be visited by appointment. Historic Scotland has listed the castle as a Category A Historic Building.
