Calator

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A calator (Latin, from calare "to exclaim"; plural calatores ) was a slave or freedman who performed certain functions in ancient Rome . In general, the word referred to a slave who provided messenger services or accompanied his master and acted as his "memory aid" (common name for this: nomenclator ).

Specifically, Calatores were auxiliaries who were subordinate to the higher quorums of priests . They served the priests as heralds and ensured that cultic regulations such as those applied to the Flemish Dialis were observed .
