history

Cambusnethan House around 1860

At the site of today's ruin there was a mansion from the early 17th century, which burned down in 1810. The Cambusnethan House, the ruins of which can still be seen today, was built in its place from 1819 to 1820. The designs come from the Scottish architect James Gillespie Graham . The three-story building on the valley side and two-story building on the slope side has numerous elements typical of the neo-Gothic style, such as battlements and pointed arches. Graham based his design on the neo-Gothic church architecture, which is why Cambusnethan House was also nicknamed Cambusnethan Priory (German priory, small monastery). The coat of arms of the builder family Lockharts of Castlehill is carved over the entrance .

From the 1970s onwards, Cambusnethan House was no longer used as a residence, but initially as a restaurant where medieval feasts were held. In 1980 the building was converted into a hotel, which closed four years later. Numerous changes were made to the interior of the property for the use of restaurants and hotels, so that only little of the original interior design had been preserved by the early 1980s. Cambusnethan's house has been vacant since 1984 and was badly damaged by fire, vandalism and water intrusion.
