history

In the twenties, the French air mail company Sociêté Latécoère set up a landing pad that was used to refuel the aircraft on the route between Paris and Buenos Aires . This was the first international airfield in southern Brazil. The commander of the route was the French writer and mail aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry , who used Campeche to rest and made friends with some of the village's residents during his stays.

In his honor, the main street of the village was named after his most famous work and is called Avenida Pequeno Príncipe (in German: " Little Prince Allee").

Surname

The name has only been used for the beach since around 1860. It is derived from that of the offshore island Ilha do Campeche , the name of which probably refers to the plant pau de campeche ("Hematoxylon campechianum"). This beach was previously referred to as Praia do Mandu together with the north and south adjoining beaches ( Joaquina and Morro das Pedras ) .

Only one legend is that the name Campeche goes back to Zé Perri (nickname of Saint-Exupéry was given by the inhabitants) and is a corruption of the French expression "Champ de Pêche" (in German: "Fischfang-Feld").

economy

Until a few decades ago, the population of the main town lived almost exclusively from fishing, which is still the main source of income for some residents today, but its importance is increasingly being pushed aside by tourism.
