Can Sans or Can Moré , today Hotel Diana is a listed building in the style of Modernism in Tossa de Mar ( Spain ).

history

The house was built in 1906 on behalf of the rich merchant Joan Sans Moré in a central beach location. It replaced a derelict fisherman's house. The client came from a family of cork traders and had made wealth in overseas trade with Colombia.

The architect of the house was Antoni de Falguera i Sivilla (1876–1945).

In 1958 the house was converted into a hotel with a restaurant and has since been operated as the Hotel Diana.

Building description

The building is laid out on a rectangular floor plan. The main facade is oriented to the west, on the Placa Espanya, and is strictly rectangular in the classical style . Four floors with a four-axis facade result in an almost square front that dominates the square.

On the beach side, on the Passeig Maritim, there is a large courtyard, which is enclosed by two-story, openwork walls. The east facade, behind the courtyard, is laid out in a modernist style and, like the west side, plastered and painted white. The undulating cornice crowned by a gable is striking. In contrast to the west facade, the facade is asymmetrical.

Inside, in the courtyard and on the east facade, there are many modernist decorative elements, mostly in green ceramic elements. Stone gargoyles, a facade structured by balconies and arches and, above all, the modernist elements of the courtyard with plant and animal motifs and a fountain make up the architectural charm of the building.
