history

The CSA Group was originally founded in 1919 as the Canadian Engineering Standards Association (CESA). In 1944 it officially became the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) to better reflect the service portfolio. Separate departments were established in the following years that focused on specific business areas. Product testing and certification (1999), consumer goods evaluation (2004), standards development and the associated range of services (2009) were added later.

Since 2012, all business areas have been brought together under the CSA Group umbrella brand . The uniform logo and slogan reflect the position of the CSA Group as a certification organization in global markets. With over 1650 employees in 14 countries, the CSA Group is represented by branches around the world.

Standards development

CSA develops and maintains more than 3000 standards and regulations related to safety, design or performance. The laws and regulations of most municipalities, provinces, or states in North America require certain products to be tested to a specific standard by a nationally recognized testing laboratory. The CSA Group also belongs to the so-called Nationally Recognized Test Laboratories (NRTL) and can support manufacturers in the testing and certification of their products.

Organizations such as SCC (Standards Council of Canada), ANSI ( American National Standards Institute ) and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) have accredited and accepted the CSA Group as an official testing and certification institute. In addition, the CSA Group for IECEE (IEC System for Conformity Testing and Certification of Electrotechnical Equipment and Components) is the national certification body in the CB procedure.

According to the company's own statements, the registered and accredited CSA test mark […] is the visible and credible testimony that products meet the relevant safety standards .... It already distinguishes billions of products worldwide and can only be used by a licensed one or otherwise by the CSA Group authorized body.
