Candi Cangkuang (2011)

The Candi Cangkuang is a Hindu temple on an island in Lake Cangkuang in Garut Governorate , Jawa Barat Province , Indonesia .

The approximately 4.5 x 4.5 meters wide and 8.5 meter high temple was probably built in the 7th or 8th century, as comparisons of rock samples with the volcano Ungaran lying Gedong Songo and the Dieng Temple Complex suggest. The ruins of Candi Cangkuang were rediscovered in 1966 after researchers from the colonial power of the Netherlands such as the Netherlands at the turn of the 20th century . B. Rogier Verbeek reported about these temple remains. The Indonesian cultural authorities then recorded fragments of the temple that had been built in the surrounding villages by the local population, and made a reconstruction based on comparisons with existing Hindu temples in central Java , the construction of which was completed in 1976. A damaged statue of Shiva with his mount Nandi was found under the ruins .
