Candi Jago (2008)

The Candi Jago is a Hindu - Buddhist temple near Malang in the Jawa Timur province , Indonesia .

The temple was built as a memorial to Wishnuwardhana , who was the fourth ruler of Singhasari and who died of natural causes in 1268. The inauguration of Candi Jago probably took place in 1280 under the aegis of Wishnuwardhana's son Kertanagara . The structure of the building and the style of the bas-relief of the first level are similar to the Penataran temple complex , so that Candi Jago in its current form was probably rebuilt around the middle of the 14th century during the Majapahit era or the original temple was extensively rebuilt. The Buddhist statue commemorating Wishnuwardhana is still on the site today. The juxtaposition of Buddhist and Hindu elements is an indication of the non-denominational religious practice during the Majapahit Empire.
