history

The company known today as Candle-lite was founded in 1840 as the Emery Lard Oil & Candle Company, Cincinnati Ohio, by Thomas Emery - an English colonist. Simple candles and light oils were produced here until 1886. Thomas Emery Jr. hired the chemist Ernst Twitchell in 1886 , who invented the breakdown of fats in 1897. This discovery of the separation of fatty acids and sebum was the basis for a new wax formula that produced a whiter, more stable and drip-free candle.
