The Cannon Air Force Base ( IATA code : CVS , ICAO code : KCVS , FAA : CVS ) is a base of the US Air Force southwest of Clovis (New Mexico) . It reports to the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC). The population of the Cannon AFB CDP at the 2010 census was 2,245. The unit stationed in Cannon is the 27th Special Operations Wing (27 SOW), which was activated on October 1, 2007.
history
Cannon Air Force Base was established in 1942; it is named after General John K. Cannon (1892–1955). The history of the base dates back to the late 1920s when Portair Field was created, a civilian passenger facility for early commercial transcontinental flights. In the 1930s Portair was renamed Clovis Municipal Airport .
