Cantharis cryptica is a beetle fromthe soft beetle family (Cantharidae).
features
The beetles are 7 to 9.5 millimeters long. The beetles are orange-light brown in color. At the apical end of the femora of the middle and rear legs there is usually a dark or black ring. The palps are completely yellow in color. The dorsal shield is deeply cut. The wing covers are in addition to the adjacent hair even longer, upstanding hair.
Cantharis pallida is a similar species. However, it is larger, has different wing-coverts and other different characteristics.
distribution
Cantharis cryptica is widespread in Europe. The distribution area of the beetle species includes both the British Isles and southern Scandinavia in the north.
Way of life
The beetles can be found in sparse forests and on the edges of forests. They fly from May to August. The adult beetles are most commonly observed in July. Cantharis cryptica larvae and adults predatorily feed on various insects. But they also eat plant-based foods.
