Cape Race Lighthouse is a lighthouse in Canada . It stands on Cape Race , the southeastern tip of Avalon in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador .
The first lighthouse at this point was put into operation in 1856. It was a cast iron tower with an oil lamp that was turned by a clockwork. In 1907 it was replaced by a 29 meter high concrete tower with a Fresnel lens , manufactured by the British company Chance Brothers and Company . The identifier consists of a white lightning bolt every 7.5 seconds. There is also a fog horn with two tones every 60 seconds. The original lighthouse then stood on Cape North on Nova Scotia and came to the Canadian Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa in 1980 .
