In human medicine, the rare combination of quartz dust lung ( silicosis ) and symptoms of chronic polyarthritis is referred to as Caplan syndrome or silicoarthritis (more rarely also Caplan-Collinet syndrome , silicoarthrosis or rheumatoid pneumoconiosis ) . Mostly workers in the coal mining sector are affected .

If, with a relevant occupational history, roundish shadows of a certain minimum can be detected in the X-ray , a report is justified because of the suspicion of an occupational disease .

The syndrome was named after its discoverer Anthony Caplan (English doctor, 1907–1976).
