from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Simplon goat , Capra Sempione , Simplerziege or Gletschergeiss is a Swiss-Italian mountain breed of domestic goat . It has its origin in the Simplon region . Today it is considered endangered.

Racial characteristics

The Simplon goats wear a long, mostly white coat. The breed is relatively large, the heights at the withers are 75 cm for the goats and 85 cm for the goats. The weights of the rather slim goats are 55 kg for the goats and 75 kg for the goats. The milk yield is low. It is used for meat production and landscaping.

Breeding history and today's breeding goals

The goat breed had a long tradition in the Simplon region, the rest of Valais and northern Italy and was widespread. When the breed was cleared in 1938, the Simplon goat was no longer recognized as a separate breed and has not been an official breed in Switzerland since then. In Italy, however, it is one of 43 recognized goat breeds, the herd book is kept by the Associazione Nazionale della Pastorizia . Since 2013, Pro Specie Rara has included the breed in the Swiss goat studbook for Valais goats.

Compared to the other Valais goats, the Capra Sempione should be bred to have a slightly shorter coat (ground clearance at least 20 cm). A good fattening ability and the breeding of large, robust animals are also aimed for.

distribution

The Simplon goat used to be widespread in Valais and the neighboring Italian region. In 2015, however, Pro Specie Rara only recorded 47 animals in Switzerland and 39 in Germany and classified the breed as endangered. However, the number of animals has increased slightly since Pro Specie Rara was included in the breeding program. Nothing is known about stocks in Italy. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has listed the Capra Sempione as an endangered breed since 2007.
