The Carajás mine is the largest iron ore mine in the world. It is located in the municipality of Parauapebas in the state of Pará in the Carajás Mountains in northern Brazil . The open pit mine is believed to contain an estimated 7.2 billion tons of iron ore, as well as gold, manganese, bauxite, copper and nickel. The mine is operated by Vale and was part of US Steel until 1977 .

The mine is largely powered by hydropower from the Tucuruí reservoir .

The iron ore is transported on the Estrada de Ferro Carajás railway over a distance of 892 km to the seaport of Ponta da Madeira near São Luís , from where it is shipped all over the world.
