Cardif Assurance Vie and Cardif Assurance Divers are specialty insurance companies in the area of residual credit insurance . They were founded in France in 1973 as a subsidiary of BNP Paribas Assurances. The premium volume in 2014 was over 27.5 billion euros, of which 62 percent was generated outside France. The assets under management amounted to 202 billion euros in 2014. Cardif has more than 10,000 employees and over 90 million policyholders in 36 countries (spread across the regions: Europe, Asia and Latin America). At the beginning of 2008, the rating agency Standard & Poor’s rated the long-term counterparty credit rating and the insurer financial strength rating of Cardif Allgemeine Versicherung and Cardif Lebensversicherung with "AA +". The branches of Cardif Insurance for Germany are based in Stuttgart. David Furtwängler has been the main representative of the branches since January 1, 2008 .

On April 7, 2014 BNP Paribas Cardif was fined 10 million euros by the Disciplinary Commission of the “Authority of Supervision and Dissolution” (ACPR - Banque de France, French Central Bank) for deficiencies and delays in fulfilling its legal obligations.

In July 2016, BNP Paribas Cardif and Santander Consumer Bank expanded their product range in the field of repair cost insurance (motor vehicle insurance sector) as part of a strategic cooperation.

In October 2016, BNP Paribas Cardif acquired intec AG as a sales partner and offers secaro repair cost insurance for used vehicles through intec .

Together with the Leipzig Graduate School of Management (HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management), a large-scale, representative market study on the subject of residual credit insurance from the customer's perspective was published on February 15, 2017 . In this scientific study, in addition to customer experiences and expectations with the insurance product, the economic benefits of residual credit insurance were also examined.

The BNP Paribas Cardif Group was able to close the 2016 financial year successfully. The assets under management rose by 5.1% to 226 billion euros, pre-tax net income (pre-tax net profit) increased by 2.8% to EUR 1.4 billion and premium income amounted to 27 , 1 billion euros.
