The company was founded in 1971 under the company name Cardinal Foods in Columbus, Ohio, by Robert D. Walter as a food wholesaler. In 1979, the company acquired the pharmaceutical company Bailey Drug Company and sold drugs under the name Cardinal Distribution, Incorporated . In addition to medicines, Cardinal Health also sells medical devices and equips hospitals, medical practices and health centers to match the product range.
