The Carl Bechem GmbH is one of the oldest companies in the field of industrial lubricants . It was founded in 1834 in Hagen by Carl Bechem (1806-1891) as the first German oil factory.

Company founder Carl Bechem

The company develops, produces and sells lubricants worldwide for users in metalworking , forming technology , heavy industry , the automotive industry and for special fields of application (e.g. food and pharmaceutical industries ). The main plant and product development are located in Hagen. Other German production sites are in Mieste (Saxony-Anhalt) and Kierspe (North Rhine-Westphalia). The company has foreign production sites in China, India and the USA.

In the middle of the 19th century, the many wire drawing shops in the Altena area , which Carl Bechem supplied with animal fats and vegetable oils, were an important group of customers. The growing mining industry and the iron and steel industry in the burgeoning Ruhr area also developed a high demand for lubricants.

Until the introduction of mineral oils on the European market in the early 1870s, Carl Bechem used vegetable oils and animal fats as lubricants . By the late 1880s, they had largely supplanted vegetable lubricants in the company's product range.

Today, bio-lubricants based on renewable raw materials are once again part of the company's business areas. In addition to biodegradable lubricants, the focus of activity in product development is the replacement of traditional mineral oil-based lubricants with modern water-based products and lubricant coatings.
