The Carl Campeau case was the kidnapping and hostage-taking of the Canadian UN worker Carl Campeau in Syria .

Campeau was abducted by the terrorist organization Al-Nusra Front in 2013 and escaped eight months later. In 2016, Suliman al-S. arrested who was one of the guards at Campeau. It was the first arrest of an alleged Syrian war criminal in Germany since the beginning of the Syrian civil war .

Carl Campeau is a Canadian lawyer who works for the United Nations . He was u. a. used for the UN in Bosnia. In 2013 he worked in Syria as legal advisor to the “ United Nations Disengagement Observer Force ”, which monitors the demilitarized zone between Syria and Israel in the Golan Heights .

In February 2013 in Damascus , the UN employee and Canadian citizen Carl Campeau was kidnapped by the Al-Nusra Front. He came to a checkpoint on an access road to Damascus. When he realized the situation, he offered the fighters 450 dollars , which he carried with him, and his UN vehicle on. The fighters took the money, the car, and everything Campeau was carrying and captured him.

The group demanded a $ 7 million ransom for the Canadian's release. Neither the UN nor the State of Canada were willing to pay ransom. After being held hostage for eight months, Campeau managed to escape.

As a recognized asylum seeker , Suliman al-S. Lived for months in the Swabian town of Backnang and learned German at a school. With the support of Syrian friends, he found a job in the Rems-Murr district .

A tip from the intelligence services brought the investigators in Germany on the trail of Suliman Al-S. From the point of view of the German investigators, this had joined the Al-Nusra Front, the Syrian offshoot of al-Qaida, under the battle name Abu Adam . Suliman Al-S. therefore belonged to the terrorist unit that kidnapped Carl Campeau. Campeau then identified the young Syrian to the German authorities as one of his guards. As. On January 17, 2016, officers of the Baden-Württemberg police arrested Suliman Al-S. firmly. The accused was sentenced on September 20, 2017 by the Stuttgart Higher Regional Court to 3 years and 6 months in prison.
