Carl Julius Adolph Kuhlmay (* 1830 in Zernien ; † December 17, 1886 in Vegesack ) was a German lawyer in Vegesack. Together with Adolph Bermpohl, he is considered the initiator of organized sea ​​rescue in Germany.

biography

Kuhlmay was born in Sellien in 1830, today part of the municipality of Zernien . From 1860 he lived in Vegesack, where he worked as a lawyer . A year later he married Catharine Margarethe Frerichs.

After reading articles by navigation teacher Adolph Bermpohl in the Vegesacker Wochenschrift about shipping disasters, on November 21, 1860, both published a “Call for contributions for the establishment of rescue stations on the German islands of the North Sea”. This is considered an important step on the way to founding the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS).

Carl Julius Adolph Kuhlmay died on December 17, 1886.
