Sauter piano

The Carl Sauter pianoforte manufactory GmbH & Co KG in Spaichingen is a resident there since 1819 manufacturer of pianos and wings . The company describes itself as "Germany's oldest piano manufacturer still in production ".

history

Born and raised in Spaichingen in Wurttemberg , Johann Grimm went to Vienna in 1813 to learn the piano-making trade from his Swabian compatriot Andreas Streicher . After living in Vienna for six years, he returned to his home town in 1819 and began building table pianos .

His nephew Carl Sauter took over the workshop in 1846 and initiated the transition to manufacture . The company has had his name ever since. Today Sauter is an internationally renowned piano manufacturer. Grand pianos have been produced since 1952, and concert grand pianos since 2000 .

In 1993 the company, like many other piano manufacturers at the time, was on the verge of bankruptcy. The industrial engineer Otto Hott took over the management and rebuilt the company. Instead of the concentration on the medium price segment that had prevailed until then, Sauter now concentrated on the production of exclusive and high quality instruments in the upper price segment.

It was particularly successful abroad. Sauter pianos can be found in the New Oslo Opera House or in the Paris Conservatory. The American jazz pianist Bob Ravenscroft has his instruments built by Sauter in Spaichingen according to designs by the piano designer Michael Spreeman.

Business data

While Sauter was still producing around 2000 pianos a year in the 1980s, it is still around 500 today. This means annual sales of around 5 million euros. The piano manufacturer employs around 50 people (as of 2015)
