Carmen de Jong

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carmen de Jong is a German geographer and hydrologist . She is Professor of Hydrology in the Faculty of Geography and Spatial Planning at the University of Strasbourg .

Life

De Jong completed a master's degree in physical geography at the University of Aberdeen in 1989 , received his doctorate in physical geography from the Free University of Berlin in 1993 and completed his habilitation in geography at the University of Bonn in 2005 . From 2006 to 2015 she was Professor of Geography at the Université Savoie-Mont-Blanc . In 2015 she accepted a professorship at the University of Strasbourg.

Act

De Jong's research focuses on sustainable development in mountain areas and bridging the gap between researchers, policymakers, stakeholders and media from local to international level.

In view of the climate crisis, it paints a sober picture of the future of winter sports . For example, in 2017 she said: "In 5 to 10 years, winter sports in the Black Forest will be over ."

De Jong is considered a critic of the use of artificial snow in ski areas. She warns that artificial snow can lead to dehydration. After critical studies on artificial snow, de Jong's research funds and projects were withdrawn; thereupon she saw herself as the victim of a bullying campaign of those who did well on the "ski circus" in the Alps. "Snow cannons have a strong lobby in France," said de Jong. “The president of the state government and the operators of the large ski stations put the university president under pressure. It is up to politicians and cable car representatives to decide whether to research artificial snow - or not, because it is not a problem. "
