life and work

Almost nothing is known about the life of Carolus Souliaert; in particular, neither his place of birth nor his year of birth are known, nor where he worked. Some of the chansons which he composed on Dutch texts have been published by Tielman Susato in his collections of Dutch songs. In the first collection, which was printed in 1551, Het lerste Musyck Boexken , there is a chanson by Souliaert with the beginning of the text “Myn rankens bruyn ooghen” (My lover's brown eyes). The second collection, Het tvueeste musyck boexken , which came out in 1553, contains five chansons by the composer with the following text beginnings:

  • "Een costerken op syn" (A sacristan on his ...)
  • "Het soude een knecktken" (When a servant ...)
  • "Ick ghinck gisteravent" (I went last night ...)
  • "Ick truere / Druck en verdriet" (I am worried / unhappiness and sadness)
  • “I want to drink with me” (I wanted to drink with moderation).

Susato also published a motet by Souliaert in his collection Liber secundus ecclesiasticarum , which came out in 1553. There are also some sacred works by Souliaert that have come down to us in manuscripts.
