Carra Castle

Carra Castle ( Irish Caisleán Carrach ) is the ruin of a castle in County Antrim , Northern Ireland . It is located 1.5 kilometers north of the town of Cushendun .

etymology

The name Carra may be derived from the family name "Carey". It used to be known as Saer's Castle.

history

When the castle was built is uncertain, but it probably dates from the early 14th century. In 1565 the castle was owned by Shane O'Neill , who held Sorley Boy MacDonnell prisoner here. In 1567, members of the MacDonnell family were guests at the castle. On June 2, 1567, they stabbed O'Neill and sent his head to the representative of Elizabeth I at Dublin Castle . In 1585 the castle was besieged by English troops. In the late Middle Ages, the area was used as a cemetery for children. Around 1730 a family called Lynch lived in the castle.

architecture

The building has the characteristics of a hall house , but its external dimensions suggest more of a residential tower . The remains that still exist today come from a square residential tower.
