Carsten Hubertus Greiner (born August 12, 1964 ) is a German theoretical nuclear physicist .

Life

Carsten Greiner is the son of Walter Greiner . He graduated from Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main in 1986 ( production of strange quark drops in relativistic heavy ion collisions ). In 1992 he received his doctorate at the University of Erlangen ( memory effects in the impact term in a relativistic transport theory ). From 1993 to 1995 he was an assistant professor at Duke University , and in 1999 he completed his habilitation at the University of Giessen under Ulrich Mosel ( interpretation of thermal field theory with the help of Langevin processes ). Since 2003 he has been a professor at the University of Frankfurt am Main. From 2008 he was Scientific Director of the Helmholtz Center ( HIC for FAIR , Helmholtz International Center for FAIR) for the planned FAIR accelerator facility in Darmstadt, for which he initiated a LOEWE joint project of the State of Hesse at the Universities of Darmstadt, Gießen and Frankfurt. Since 2011 he has been the Stefan Lyson Laureate Professorship of the Frankfurt Friends' Association for Basic Physical Research. In 2011 he was elected a full member of the Academia Europaea .

He deals with the theory of quark-gluon plasma in relativistic heavy ion collisions and the search for signs of strange matter, the increased occurrence of which could be an indicator for the formation of a quark-gluon plasma. In this context, he is also generally concerned with quantum chromodynamics in non-equilibrium (transport theory, thermodynamics, phase transitions) and with applications of the equation of state of hot and dense nuclear matter in astrophysics (neutron stars).
